No form of art is more challenging to illustrate than Fantasy Art. Nowhere in the real world do imaginary
creatures and the realms of fantasy exist and only the most talented of illustrators have the ability to bring
to life these creatures and realms in a way we can all envision.
Les Evans has such a talent. He works soley from his imagination, constantly sketching ideas, and works
hard to share his vision. While Les works with watercolours and gouache, some of his more interesting
and detailed works are done in pen & ink.
Now living in Nelson, British Columbia in Canada with his wife, Shirley and their Irish Setter, Red
Sonja, Les grew up on the west side of New York City, where he attended and graduated from the High
School of Music & Art. After moving to Canada in the 1960s, he studied commercial art and visual
communications at Camosun College in Victoria, British Columbia, the Kootenay School of Arts in
Nelson, British Columbia and Alberta College of Art in Calgary, Alberta. While continuing to do
freelance illustrating, Les has been employed as a graphic artist and reprographic film technician.
At age 49, Les a father of four and grandfather to three grandsons, is pursuing his dream of being a
fantasy art illustrator.
Seven years ago Les developed a medical condition called a benign tremor which causes his left hand, his
drawing hand, to shake. After five years of frustration and struggling to continue his work, he decided to
try, with success, to draw and paint with his right hand. All his recent work is done right-handed and are
better than before.
Although new to the world of fantasy art, Les looks forward to achieving a successful career illustrating
his visions for all to share.
